It is Martin Luther King day today. As part of the federal government, Hubs will be off work. The kids will too for the very first time, barring Dakota’s one year of school back in the States. In the past, they have been fortunate to attend wonderful overseas schools. But this post, for the first time, they are experiencing an American education through a DODs military school which includes a day off to honor Mr. King.
We have a lot to contemplate today. There is the research and preparation for Jackson’s school science project. Hubs and I are looking at furniture possibilities to organize the television area with all the popular gadgets that we have to go with it. Dakota is contemplating exams she is in the middle of and a cover letter for an application to a summer’s writer’s workshop. And we are contemplating what to do with Bezi’s training as he knows all his commands, but still is stubborn as a doorknob in choosing when he wants to follow those commands. A huge curious and mildly misbehaving 100 pound dog is not an asset. Especially here.
But there are other important things to contemplate today too, such as the lessons of MLK’s life’s example. So I leave you with some quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. which I hope to bring to the dinner table tonight for discussion. Some I have heard, others are new to me. All are still relevant in today’s times.
Peace to you all.
MLK QUOTES:Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal. A man can’t ride your back unless it’s bent. History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.
